The Rams are sentencing Gus Frerotte to die
Quarterback benchings happen all the time. A QB isn’t effective, he gets benched. A QB gets hurt, he gets benched. A QB isn’t often benched because the team doesn’t want him to keep getting hurt as a result of his line’s awfulness.
Concerned about the punishment absorbed by Bulger, who has played at least the last two games with two cracked ribs, Rams coach Scott Linehan has decided to rest his two-time Pro Bowl quarterback for at least one week and possibly more.
Fourteen-year veteran Gus Frerotte, regarded as one of the NFL’s top backups, will replace Bulger in the lineup for Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals.
The switch to Frerotte, team officials indicated to ESPN.com on Wednesday morning, is not permanent. Instead, it is aimed at providing Bulger some time to recover and to perhaps gain some new insights from the sideline on the Rams’ offensive struggles. St. Louis is one of only three winless franchises in the league, and Bulger and a sputtering offense that has scored only 39 points, have been major disappointments.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that line about Frerotte being one of the NFL’s top backups. In whose reality? His defining moment as a QB was banging his head against a wall to give himself a concussion. Not exactly the kind of QB play I expect to turn my awful team around. Unless we were ranked at the bottom of the league in banged heads. Then I suppose we might.
My theory: Gus Frerotte must have slept with Scott Linehan’s wife. Now Linehan just wants to watch Gus Frerotte die as a result of the porous St. Louis offensive line that’s allowed Bulger to get sacked eleven times so far. Playing QB for the Rams offers as much protection as wearing a helmet made out of a watermelon while riding your motorcycle. I wouldn’t be shocked if Frerotte were literally torn into two perfectly symmetrical pieces next week.
